Sushma Miss (Guru Smt Sushama Gopinath) is one of the finest teachers I ever had. She made my dreams of learning bharatnatyam come true beautifully. Even though I couldn’t practice it professionally, I cherish all the moments as her disciple; those moments are still fresh in my memory.

Six years ago I made a few enquiries for a reputed classical dance academy in Panvel, closer to home to pursue my hobby of learning classical dance. During this time I had heard a lot about Navarasa and the excellent training offered by the academy and its renowned guru Sushama Gopinath from my aunt, who was also undergoing training from Navarasa in Nerul. I also heard that the academy conducts programmes throughout the year wherein a student gets enough opportunities to showcase his/ her talents and improve the confidence and finesse. I attended one such programme and was impressed by the dance, the quality and rapport amongst the students. My search for a good dance academy ended there and I joined Navarasa. That was somewhere in 2004 and since then I am associated with Navarasa.

NAVARASA means the 9 bhavas expresed in a classical dance form. I learnt these bhavas from my guru Smt Sushma Gopinath who is an exponent in various classical dance forms. I was very poor in dancing and had the stage fright initially. Today I proudly say that I am a fine dancer and have no fear in performing on stage; the entire credit for bringing this positive approach in me goes to my Guru Sushama Gopinath. NAVARASA Academy was my choice to learn dance because this is the only dance academy I know were you get an opportunity to learn dance by understanding what you are conveying through the dance and not simply learning and performing... Apart from this, NAVARASA also gives each and every student to perform on various stages. Thanks to my Guru, I could not only perform bharatnatyam but also got the opportunity to perform Kerala-natanam and Kathakali.

To my knowledge, in the entire Navi Mumbai, there is no other dance class that can equal Navrassa, which brought bharatnatyam to Kalamboli, Seawoods and Belapur catering to almost 200 students. I was fond of dancing since my childhood. But, there were hardly any formal dance class near my locality and my only solace was to mimic Hindi film song scenes. The thrust in me for classical dance finally took me to Guru Smt Sushama Gopinath. It was a defining moment and I firmly decided to learn bharatnatyam from her. I did it for 6 years and today I am teaching it. It’s a matter of great pride to learn bharatnatyam from Guru Smt Sushma Gopinath who treats her disciples as her daughters and teach them with great love and affection. What I am today is solely because of Navarasa and the Guru Smt Sushama Gopinath. Let Almighty God give her a long and healthy life so that she can impart the dance to more and more students!
